The graph shows the amount of electricity produced by six different sources of power

Interactive

The graph illustrates the quantity of electricity generated by six distinct energy sources over a given period. Overall, it is evident that fossil fuels accounted for the largest share of electricity production, though renewable energy sources showed a notable increase over time.

Natural gas and coal were consistently the two highest contributors throughout the period, together making up the majority of total electricity output. Coal production remained relatively stable for much of the timeframe before experiencing a modest decline in the latter years, whereas natural gas showed a more gradual but steady upward trend, eventually surpassing coal as the leading source by the end of the period.

Among the renewable sources, wind energy demonstrated the most significant growth, rising sharply from a relatively low base to become a considerably more prominent contributor by the final year. Solar power also increased, though it remained a considerably smaller proportion of the total compared to wind. Hydroelectric power, while a consistent source of electricity throughout, showed little change over the period and remained at a broadly stable level.

Nuclear energy occupied a middle position among the sources, maintaining a fairly steady output with only minor fluctuations. It neither experienced the dramatic growth seen in wind power nor the decline observed in coal.

In conclusion, while conventional energy sources such as coal and gas continued to dominate electricity production during the period shown, the data suggests a clear shift towards greater reliance on renewable energy, with wind power in particular emerging as an increasingly significant contributor to the overall energy mix.

Current Band 8.0

Target Band 8.5

  • Inclusion of exact statistical data points or units to support the comparative analysis.
  • Even greater variety of advanced syntactic structures.

Strengths

Task Response

Provides a clear macro-level overview summarizing the dominant trends without getting bogged down in minor numerical details.

Coherence

Each paragraph opens with a clear topical focus, ensuring the reader can easily track the categorization of the different energy sources.

Vocabulary

Demonstrates natural, high-value adjectival collocations appropriate for academic data description.

Grammar

Expert handling of a complex multi-clause sentence incorporating temporal prepositions and contrastive conjunctions.

Weaknesses

Absence of Specific Numerical Data

Low

While trends and relative relationships are well-described, the report omits exact figures, percentages, or units from the graph, which limits precision.

Priority improvements

  1. 1Incorporate Specific Data PointsIntegrate key figures, percentages, or units from the chart alongside relative trend descriptions to fully satisfy data-precision requirements.Impact: Low

Assessment summary

The essay is an exceptionally well-written Task 1 response that accurately summarizes complex graph trends with precise vocabulary, natural cohesive devices, and a high proportion of error-free complex sentences. Minor limitations in advanced structural variety prevent a 9.0.

Scoring criteria

Strengths

  • Employs a wide range of precise academic vocabulary and topic-specific collocations.
  • Demonstrates excellent control of phrasing such as 'modest decline', 'gradual but steady upward trend', and 'prominent contributor'.

Weaknesses

  • Occasional near-synonym choices or collocations could be even more idiomatic, though none impede communication.

Justification

The writer uses a rich vocabulary resource with natural and sophisticated control, showing fluency and precision in conveying fine shades of meaning.
