Dear Maria,

How are you? I hope you are doing well and everything is good with your family. I am writing because I want to invite you to come and visit me in the next few weeks. It would be so nice to see you again after such a long time!

I have been living in my new apartment for about three months now and I really like it here. The city is very nice and there are many interesting things we can do together. I think you will enjoy it a lot.

If you come, I can show you around the city and we can visit some of the famous places here. There is a beautiful old town center and also a very nice park near my home where we can go for walks. We can also eat in some good restaurants, I know a few places where the food is really delicious.

You can stay in my apartment with me so you don't need to pay for a hotel. I have a spare room and it will be very comfortable for you. Please let me know which dates are good for you and I will try to make everything ready before you arrive.

I really hope you can come because I miss spending time with you and we always have such fun together. It will be great to catch up and talk about everything that has happened.

Please write back soon and tell me if this is possible for you.

With love, Anya

Improvement plan

Close to Band 7.5

Current Band 7.0

Target Band 7.5

  • Greater lexical resource with less reliance on simple, repeated adjectives.
  • Flawless punctuation control across all sentence boundaries.

Strengths

Task Response

Clearly states the purpose of the letter right at the beginning, establishing a strong and unmistakable communicative focus.

Grammar

Accurately deploys a conditional structure combined with coordinate clauses to express possibilities for the visit.

Weaknesses

Lexical Repetition

Medium

The essay repeatedly uses common adjectives like 'nice' and 'good', limiting lexical variety.

Punctuation Control

Low

A comma splice occurs when separating two independent clauses with only a comma instead of a conjunction, semicolon, or full stop.

Priority improvements

  1. 1Expand Lexical RangeAvoid repetitive use of high-frequency words like 'nice' and 'good' by incorporating a wider variety of descriptive synonyms.Impact: Medium
  2. 2Eliminate Comma SplicesEnsure that independent clauses are correctly punctuated with conjunctions, full stops, or semicolons rather than commas alone.Impact: Low

Assessment summary

The response is a well-structured, friendly, and natural informal letter that fully addresses all requirements of the task (inviting a friend, suggesting activities, and offering accommodation). The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, and the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow. Grammar and vocabulary are generally accurate and natural, though somewhat standard for everyday conversation rather than advanced academic prose.

Scoring criteria

Strengths

  • Appropriate and natural vocabulary for an informal personal letter (e.g., 'spare room', 'catch up', 'old town center').
  • Spelling and word formation are entirely accurate.

Weaknesses

  • Vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive in places (using words like 'nice' and 'good' multiple times).
  • Lacks less common or idiomatic lexical items.

Justification

The vocabulary is adequate for the task with good accuracy, but limited variety keeps it at Band 6.5.
